Vol. 218 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Auxiliary Postman.

38.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person (name supplied), who has given 18 years' good service as auxiliary postman, has not been appointed to the permanent post that became vacant at Roundstone post office, Galway.

Roundstone subpost office is in the Gaeltacht and a good knowledge of Irish is essential for appointment there. The person referred to in the Deputy's question did not possess this qualification and he was, therefore, ineligible for appointment as auxiliary postman at Roundstone. He had previously been employed for almost 16 years on a small allowance deliverer post of 11 hours a week but this employment ceased three years ago.

Will the Minister indicate what qualifications the successful man had?

It is not usual to give that information.

I know that the people whose duty it is to study the merits or demerits of applicants said he was fully qualified.

May I take it that the fact that this man was the secretary of the local cumann had no bearing on the matter?

Well, I do not know——

Would the Minister regard this area as a good area for pheasant shooting?

That is a silly question.

If the Minister goes down, he will want to be careful.
