Vol. 218 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tintern (Wexford) Postal Service.

42.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the dissatisfaction of the residents of the Tintern area, Salt-mills, County Wexford, due to the late delivery of the post now as compared with the delivery about a year ago when the route of delivery enabled the residents to receive their post at 11 a.m. instead of at 12 noon as at present.

I have received one request for earlier delivery from the area in question. The only development within the past 18 months which has affected the scheduled delivery arrangements has been that a house, formerly vacant, has been occupied. When there is correspondence for this house delivery to some other houses is retarded by 15 minutes at most. The circumstances do not warrant any change in the existing arrangements.

Would the Minister not agree that the residents in this area are receiving their post an hour later than they used to?

I do not. They certainly are not receiving their mail an hour later than the previous scheduled times, as set out by the regulations given to me.

There are certain residents who came into that area who, actually, are non-nationals and they are receiving their post at the appropriate time, whereas nationals are receiving it an hour later to accommodate these non-nationals.

That is not correct. One vacant house has been occupied and the normal procedure is for the postman to deliver in the line of houses occupied on the route. He could hardly be expected to do anything else without having to retrace his steps.

Why put the nationals at the end of the queue?

There are no nationals at the end of the queue. These people have come to live in a house which was formerly unoccupied and which the postman takes in in his normal delivery sequence.
