Vol. 218 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of Concrete Lamp Standards.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state with reference to the concrete lamp standards erected by the Galway County Council, which were referred to by the Minister for Local Government in a reply of 11th November last, whether customs duty was paid thereon; or whether a customs free licence was issued in respect thereof.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance whether there are any customs duties, quotas or other restrictions affecting the importation of concrete lamp standards; and, if so, if he will give details thereof.

I propose, with your permission a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

There are no quota or other restrictions affecting the importation of concrete lamp standards.

Prior to September last, these articles were regarded as falling within a duty-free classification in the Tariff. The position was then reviewed by the Revenue Commissioners and they decided that these articles are properly classified at Heading No. 68.11 (A) and, accordingly, subject to duty at the rate of 40 per cent ad valorem.

I understand that the lamp standards referred to in the question of 11th November, 1965, were imported prior to September, 1965.

Are we to understand that no application of any kind was required to be made for the importation of these lamp posts at the time they came in?

No application for duty-free concessions was required up to September, 1965, since the adoption of the Brussels Nomenclature in 1963 because they were deemed during that period to be free of duty.

Apart from duty-free application, can the Minister say whether any other kind of licence would have been required?

No other kind of licence was necessary.
