asked the Minister for Lands (a) the total acreage of land in County Mayo taken over by the Land Commission but not yet distributed, (b) the acreage in process of acquisition, (c) the annual rate of distribution in County Mayo, and (d) whether any effort is being made to accelerate this rate.

Replies to the various parts of the question are as follows:

(a) the Land Commission have at present on hands in County Mayo, apart from substantial areas of mountain and turbary etc., an aggregate area of about 4,900 acres of arable land for use as a working pool for land settlement; (b) proceedings are at present in progress for the compulsory acquisition or voluntary purchase of some 9,500 acres in the county; (c) the annual rate of distribution over the past ten years is approximately 7,000 acres; (d) the answer to (d) is yes; arrangements for the recruitment of extra inspectors are in hand for this purpose.
