Vol. 219 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of GEC Factory.

76.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a further statement in regard to the closure of the GEC factory at Dundalk, stating who now owns the factory, for what purpose it is being used, whether State funds advanced to GEC in respect of it have been refunded, and whether he is aware of any plans to re-open the factory.

The General Electric Company own the factory referred to by the Deputy and it is not being used at present. The factory may not be disposed of without the consent of An Foras Tionscal. I am not aware of any definite plans to re-open the factory, but efforts are being made to interest industrialists in acquiring and re-opening it and pending the outcome of these endeavours the question of a refund of the grant paid to the General Electric Company does not arise.
