Vol. 219 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boy Apprentices.

80.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a considerable number of boys who have the necessary educational qualifications and are registered with the Apprenticeship Board are unable to obtain positions as apprentices; and what steps he is taking to deal with this situation.

I am informed by An Cheard Chomhairle that the overall position is that there are more vacancies for apprenticeships than there are qualified applicants. In some areas, however, boys who have the necessary educational qualifications and who are registered as candidates for apprenticeship may not be able to obtain positions as apprentices in the trades in which they are interested. An Chomhairle has pointed out that it would not be possible to arrange that every qualified boy should obtain a position in his chosen trade in his own locality. An Chomhairle has added that every effort is made to increase the intake of apprentices where this is required in the interests of a particular trade or industry or in the national interest.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
