Vol. 219 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Forest Timber.

20.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will arrange for the State forest at Dunmore, Durrow, County Laois to sell timber of no commercial value to any local resident who needs it for fuel in view of a likely fuel shortage during the approaching winter because of the fact that local coal mines are not working, and that supplies of Bord na Móna turf have been restricted.

I will arrange to make available for sale locally at Durrow State forest and other State forests in the area as much firewood class timber as possible.

Can the timber be made available? There is a grave fuel shortage in this area and could the Minister make representations to the local forester to sell whatever timber he considers should be sold as firewood?

The local foresters have already been so instructed but my information is that the amount of firewood available is rather small and scattered over a wide area and it may take some time to make it available.

You are welcome back.

Thank you.
