Vol. 219 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Backing of Sterling.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in connection with the proposal that sterling be backed by the economy of all nations using it instead of relying exclusively on the British economy, any approach has been made to the Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I take it that the Deputy is referring to some suggestions made in a study, to which I have seen references in the press, sponsored by two British organisations—the Commonwealth Industries Association and the Economic Research Council. The Government have not been approached by anyone in connection with these suggestions, which the sponsoring organisations have pointed out are the views of the individual authors of the study.
