Vol. 220 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hearing Aids.

25.

asked the Minister for Health what provisions are made under the Health Acts for the supply of hearing aids to deaf people who can benefit by them.

Persons suffering from hearing defects, who are eligible for aural services under the provisions of the Health Act, 1953, are referred by the health authority to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist for examination. Where, in particular cases, the Specialist recommends the supply of a hearing aid, arrangements are made by the health authority with the National Organisation for Rehabilitation for the fitting of the ear mould and the supply of a suitable hearing aid, free of charge to the person concerned. The cost involved is recouped by the health authority to the National Organisation for Rehabilitation.
