Vol. 220 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Admission to Engineering Trade.

29.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the extent of apprenticeship necessary and any other qualifications required before persons seeking to enter the engineering trade in Cork can be admitted to such trade; and if such requirements are adhered to in the admission of persons to this trade in Cork.

I am informed by An Ceard Chomhairle that the following qualifications are necessary for entry into apprenticeship in the engineering trade in Cork and elsewhere in the country:—

(i) a minimum age of 15 years;

(ii) a pass in specified subjects in the Group Certificate or Intermediate Certificate Examinations;

(iii) the consent of the National Apprenticeship Committee for the Engineering and Metal trades.

I understand from An Chomhairle that these requirements are being observed in the Cork area.
