Vol. 221 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Week in London.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce why no Ireland week will be held in London this year, especially in view of the urgent necessity to increase exports.

59.

Mr. P. Hogan

(South Tipperary) and Mr. L'Estrange asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he had prior consultation on the proposed abandonment of Irish week in London for 1966; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

60.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will explain the reason for the decision to abandon an Ireland week in London this year in view of the importance of promoting the sales of Irish goods abroad.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take together Questions Nos. 58, 59 and 60.

I am informed that it is planned to hold a major trade tourism and travel promotion in London later on to mark the opening of Ireland House and that this has necessitated a departure from the plan followed in previous years. This, however, does not affect the store displays and promotional activities in London which have been arranged to coincide with the National Festival week. I should add that the form and timing of export promotional activities are matters entirely within the discretion of Córas Tráchtála, which was established under the Export Promotion Act, 1959, to promote, assist and develop exports.
