Vol. 221 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Untrained Teachers.

74.

asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of one-teacher schools in the State, (2) the number of one-teacher schools in which untrained teachers are at present employed, (3) the number of two-teacher schools in which untrained teachers are employed and (4) the total number of untrained teachers in schools other than one-teacher and two-teacher schools.

There are 730 one-teacher schools in the State, of which 143 are staffed by untrained teachers. The number of two-teacher schools in which untrained teachers are employed is 1,025. The number of untrained teachers in schools other than one- and two-teacher schools is 664. It might be mentioned that the majority of the untrained among the 664 are religious novices who normally do a few years' teaching in an untrained capacity before entering a training college.
