Vol. 221 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Elections.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is yet in a position to announce the date of the local elections; and, if not, what factors must be considered before he can give the election date.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is now in a position to state the exact date on which the local elections will be held.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together.

Under section 81 of the Electoral Act, 1963, as amended last year, the local elections must be held before 31st December, 1966. While the law on the subject stipulates no factors to which regard must be had in fixing the polling day at the elections, naturally I shall give due consideration to the factors which will secure the greatest convenience to all concerned with the elections.

I hope to be in a position to announce the date of the elections in about a month's time.

It will not be too much strain on the Minister?

I do not think so.
