Vol. 221 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Ross Road Flooding.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the considerable flooding which occurs every year on the Waterford Road at Rosbercon, New Ross, County Wexford; and of the probability that this problem will be yet further aggravated when the new bridge is built in the area; and what proposals he has for the better drainage of this area.

I understand that road flooding occurs on occasions due to a combination of spring tide, flood in the river and an upstream wind. The proposed new bridge at New Ross will not aggravate the problem and it is intended as part of the reconstruction work to raise the level of a section of the Waterford road in the vicinity of the new structure. There are no drainage proposals before my Department in the matter.

When proposals were made in regard to the bridge, was the problem of annual flooding taken into account and does the Minister suggest that certain steps will be taken to obviate such flooding?

This flooding problem was specifically brought to the attention of the consultant. As a result of his consideration, certain proposals were made.

Will they cure it?

It is doubtful if it will be an absolutely guaranteed assurance against any possible flooding. It is suggested that in all the circumstances it is unlikely that these roads will be flooded except in most extraordinary conditions.

(Cavan): Would the Minister not get in touch with the gentleman responsible for the Templemore swimming pool who seems to be such a good hand at getting rid of water?
