asked the Minister for Justice (a) the numbers, and (b) the cost in pay and emoluments, of the Garda Síochána before and after the recent increases in pay and emoluments.

The most recent increase in the pay of the Garda Síochána was the 12 per cent increase that was granted with effect from 1st February, 1964, following the National Wages Agreement.

The strength of the Force on 31st January, 1964, was 6,397. The cost of the Force, in pay and emoluments, prior to the 12 per cent increase was £5,497,000 a year. As a result of the 12 per cent this was increased to £6,155,000.
