Vol. 221 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protective Helmets for Motor Cyclists.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the remarks of the Coroner of East Waterford at an inquest on 24th February in Ardkeen Hospital; and if, in view of the number of fatalities resulting from falls from motor cycles, he will take steps to make compulsory the wearing of protective helmets by motor cyclists.

I have seen a report of the remarks in question. The measure suggested by the Deputy would be impractical in the absence of adequate controls over the standards of helmets. A provision to achieve this will be included in new legislation, the drafting of which is at an advanced stage.
