Vol. 221 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illegal Road Haulage.

43.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each of the years 1955 to 1965 inclusive (a) the number of prosecutions for illegal road haulage, and (b) the number of cases investigated in which prosecutions were not made.

As regards the first part of the question, the available statistics refer to all prosecutions brought under the Road Transport Acts and separate statistics are not compiled in relation to cases of illegal road haulage. Furthermore, the figures relate to the number of persons proceeded against. The information is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Statistics are not available of the number of cases investigated by the gardaí and it would not be feasible to have such statistics compiled. The Deputy will appreciate that each time the gardaí stop a haulage vehicle they are investigating a possible breach of the Road Transport Acts.

Following is the statement:—
