Vol. 221 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connemara School Transport Services.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the strong demands being made by parents of children in the Ballinafad area of Connemara for school transport services and the necessity for a central school in the area to replace the four small schools which are in a very bad state of repair; and when the building of a new school will commence.

A State-aided transport service is at present in operation from the Barnamoraun district to Ballinafad, County Galway. The number of eligible children would not warrant a transport service from the Goroman district.

A suitable site has been offered for the proposed new central school to replace Ballinafad and three other small schools and sketch plans have been prepared. Until evidence of title to the site has been furnished, however, a grant towards the cost of the new building cannot be sanctioned nor can the further arrangements for the provision of the school be undertaken. In the circumstances, therefore, I am unable to say when the building of the new school will commence.

I might add that when the central school has been built transport will be provided by the State.
