Vol. 221 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Attendance at Six County University.

67.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Education whether the question of holders of Donegal County Council scholarships or other adjoining county council scholarship holders being eligible to attend the new Coleraine university was raised in his recent talks with the Six County Minister for Education; and whether county council authorities that may be affected will be consulted.

The tenure of university scholarships was one of the matters discussed at my first meeting with the Northern Ireland Minister for Education.

The statutory position here is that it is a matter for each county or borough council to decide at which university or universities its scholarships may be tenable.

Mr. O'Leary

If these discussions are fruitful, there will be no bar to scholarship holders in the Republic attending Coleraine university?

There is no bar at present.

Mr. O'Leary

Does the Minister foresee any increased use of these scholarships arising from the talks?

It is conceivable.
