Vol. 222 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Flooding.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the flooding caused to private and public property in the district of Kilternan and adjacent areas of County Dublin by the Shanganagh River; and if he will take such steps as may be necessary to have the cause of flooding determined and remedied.

This river has been noted for consideration in the arterial drainage programme but it is not likely to be reached for a considerable time.

Will the Shannon be drained first?

Could I ask the Parliamentary Secretary what he means by "a considerable time" in this case? Is this not a very small stream?

And is it not a stream that should be drained under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, only there is no money?

I gather that the amount of agricultural land affected by this stream is not very large. From the information we have in our office, it does not appear to be a particularly attractive scheme from a drainage point of view and consequently it may have to wait a considerable time until the more attractive schemes have gone through.

It is not alone land but houses which are being flooded.

The Deputy must recall that when it comes to the question of arterial drainage, agricultural land is of primary importance.

Nobody cares about houses—is that the present attitude?

I did not say that. The drainage of agricultural land is of primary importance.
