Vol. 222 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Estate.

20.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that the Farrell Estate, Dyrick, Ballinamult, County Waterford has been purchased by a person who is already a large land owner and living ten miles from the estate he will state why the Land Commission have not acquired this land for division among the small-holders of the area.

Such information as is available to the Land Commission is to the effect that the purchaser of this holding lives three or four miles away and not ten. The Land Commission did in fact interest themselves in the holding and had discussions with the owner's representative but in the meantime the lands were sold. Since there were no proceedings in progress at the time and no notice of intention to inspect the lands had been issued, the question of compulsory acquisition did not arise. As stated in my reply to the Deputy's previous Question of last Wednesday, the holding is a comparatively small one of 35 acres with a rateable valuation of less than 2/- per acre; again I may say that the Land Commission have already an area of 120 acres for disposal in this locality.
