Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sex Discrimination in Semi-State Bodies.

23.

Mrs. Burke

andMrs. Hogan O'Higgins asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, as regards his reported intention to put an end to any sex discrimination which might exist in the semi-State bodies, when he intends to end the differentials in pay between the sexes.

I assume the question refers to an interview which I gave to a journalist and which was reported on 25th March, 1966.

The journalist alleged that there is discrimination against women in semi-State bodies, both as regards the type of jobs open to them and the existence of salary differentials. I undertook to make inquiries to see whether the position was as the journalist had stated and I am doing this.

The Deputies will appreciate that the semi-State bodies have a considerable degree of autonomy and that the number of semi-State bodies for which I am responsible is limited.
