Vol. 222 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Presidential Election: Board of Works Employee.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is permissible for an employee of the Board of Works to act as director of elections in a Dublin Constituency for a nominee in the Presidential election.

It is not permissible for an employee of the Board of Works who is a civil servant to act as the director of elections in a Dublin constituency for a nominee in the Presidential election.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary take steps to see that the director of elections for the candidate supported by his Party in Dublin South-Central will retire from office, having regard to the fact that he is an overseer in the Board of Works?

I have no such information.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware—this confirms the rumour that in fact this overseer in the Board of Works was director of elections for the Fianna Fáil Party nominee—that last Thursday he phoned the O'Higgins election campaign headquarters and apologised for the fact that some of his supporters had torn down Mr. O'Higgins's poster and gave the assurance that this had been done contrary to his instructions, but by so doing he identified himself as being in the position which he holds in the public service?

He is not a civil servant.

He is not.

The Deputy sought specific information and he has got it. The supplementary questions have nothing at all to do with the question.

That is a matter for the Chair. The Parliamentary Secretary should see that this man quits either post.

It does not cover the man the Deputy is talking about at all.

It is my opinion that he will get promotion. He will be made an inspector.
