Vol. 222 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Precautions against Swamp Fever.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in view of the prevalence of disease on the Continent among horses, commonly known as swamp fever, he is satisfied that the action taken by his Department is adequate to prevent the disease from being brought into this country.

As announced on 16th May, I have suspended the import of all horses from the Continent in order to prevent the possible introduction of swamp fever into this country. A number of other measures have also been taken, and the veterinary staff of my Department are keeping in close touch about the situation with their opposite numbers in other countries and have had discussions with the interested organisations in this country. I shall not hesitate to take whatever additional measures may appear to be appropriate or necessary at any time.
