Vol. 222 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Smallpox Epidemic.

45.

asked the Minister for Health if he has noted the extension of the smallpox epidemic in the United Kingdom; and if he will state what precautions he has taken to prevent the advent of this disease to this country.

I am aware of the existence of variola minor, which is a mild form of smallpox, in the West Midlands of England, and I am also aware that the public health authorities there are taking all appropriate steps to limit the outbreak.

In Dublin, the main point of entry from the affected area of England, the local health authority are requesting passengers from that area to give their Irish addresses for transmission to the appropriate chief medical officer and are issuing them with a standard warning notice advising them of the possible danger of infection with smallpox.

The situation remains under continuous review and if necessary the control measures will be extended.

Are those examinations carried out at places other than the port of Dublin?

Mr. O'Malley

Yes. The examinations take place at Dublin, Cork, Wexford, Rosslare, Shannon Airport and Dún Laoghaire.
