I understand that, on 15th April, 1966, the date of the most recent review of the Dublin Corporation approved housing list, there were 694 families of six persons and over, 1,072 families of five persons and 3,229 families of four persons and under on the list. The number of families of seven persons and over was not assessed separately on that date but the number of such families at present on the list is stated to be 373. The preferences to be observed by housing authorities in the letting of dwellings are prescribed in the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations, 1950 and 1953. These Regulations provide that, for the purpose of determining the order of priority within a class of applicants, the housing authority shall obtain and have regard to a report and recommendation from the chief medical officer.
Can the Parliamentary Secretary give the House any indication as to when these people may expect to be housed?
All of them?
Yes, or any of them. Will they be housed within the next 20 years at the present rate of progress?
Yes, I would say so.
The Parliamentary Secretary thinks they might.
Will the Parliamentary Secretary agree that the housing of these families is being deferred because of the failure of the Government to sanction schemes submitted for the construction of dwellings and will he also agree that the responsibility for any further delay lies on the shoulders of the Minister and Government concerned?
I do not agree at all.
