Vol. 223 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Relations and Prices.

44.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what proposals he has to deal with the present industrial unrest and rising prices.

The Dáil will, in due course, have an opportunity of considering legislative proposals aimed at improving industrial relations and promoting harmony. In the meantime I have been in consultation with representative organisations of employers and workers and I am reviewing the situation in the light of these consultations.

I propose to continue to use my powers under the Prices Acts 1958 and 1965 to secure that there will be no avoidable increase in prices. The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that the Consumer Price Index rose by only one point in the period mid-May, 1965 to mid-February, 1966.

That proves that what the Labour Party said about the increase in prices was right.

What about the increase in the price of butter?

No matter what I do I cannot win.
