Vol. 223 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Honey Imports.

59.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what licences have been issued for the importation of honey during 1965 and 1966; to whom such licences were issued; and what steps are taken by his Department to ensure that honey imported and bottled in Ireland is clearly labelled as of foreign origin.

Honey may be imported without licence on payment of duty. Duty-free import licences were granted for a total of 339 tons in 1965 and 267 tons in 1966 to date. It is not the practice to give the names of persons to whom such licences are granted.

My Department is arranging for early discussions with firms which import honey for bottling with a view to ensuring that it is appropriately labelled.

Is this Egyptian honey?

I think the other side of the House knows more about Egyptian bees than I do.

You all know about Egyptian bees, or you ought to.
