Vol. 223 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Advertising Signs.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government what regulations at present exist controlling advertising signs, in particular those employing electric lights or luminous paint, erected at the roadside; if he is aware that certain of these signs which feature arrows, red lights, and so on, can cause confusion to a driver unfamiliar with the road; and if he will take steps to have more effective control exercised over these signs in the interest of road safety.

The provision of advertising signs is controlled by planning authorities under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, or, where appropriate, by the Garda Síochána, under subsection (14) of section 95 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961. I feel that these legislative provisions for the control of such signs are adequate and that amending legislation is not necessary. If, however, the Deputy is aware of the existence of particular advertising signs causing confusion or danger to road users I shall be glad to receive from him such details as will enable me to take up the matter with the appropriate authority.
