Vol. 223 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Hazard.

17.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware of the traffic hazard to children living in O'Devaney Gardens, North Circular Road, Dublin, caused as a result of the rerouting of buses through part of this estate; and if he will consult with the traffic authorities so that this matter may be corrected as soon as possible.

The rerouting to which the Deputy refers involves buses on the Nos. 9, 10 and 14 routes on the outward journey to the Phoenix Park only. This arrangement was introduced in October, 1961, following numerous complaints and representations from local residents and public representatives for the area regarding the danger and potential accident risk involved in the former practice of buses reversing on Infirmary Road into Aberdeen Street, which is a narrow street, in order to commence the return journey to the city. In addition, passengers intending to go to the Phoenix Park were obliged to cross Infirmary Road when they alighted from the buses.

The position was then examined by Garda traffic officers in consultation with Córas Iompair Éireann and the present arrangement was agreed upon. It is considered that from the point of view of safety and traffic this arrangement is the most suitable.

Mr. O'Leary

Is the Minister aware that there was an accident some time ago in which a child was killed——

I am so aware.

Mr. O'Leary

This would not have occurred but for the rerouting of buses through this part of the estate.

There was a fatal accident but it had nothing to do with the rerouting.

Mr. O'Leary

Was it not due to the fact that traffic was rerouted? It would not have happened, surely, if the traffic had not been diverted?

That is pushing it a bit far.

Mr. O'Leary

A child was killed. The Minister should consult the traffic authorities with a view to bringing about an alteration in the route.

That might make the situation worse.

Mr. O'Leary

Will the Minister consult the police about the matter?
