Vol. 223 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Estate

20.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Million Estate, Fletcherstown, Wilkinstown, Navan, County Meath has been offered to the Land Commission; and, if so, why they have not agreed to acquire it.

The answer to the first part of the question is "No". The Land Commission did in fact interest themselves in this property, which comprises 74 acres, and had discussions with the owner and his representative; they were informed, however, that arrangements had been made for the sale of the lands to another party.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say when that information was conveyed to the Land Commission?

I do not know whether I have that here or not. The Commissioners directed an inquiry to see if the owner would be willing to sell under voluntary purchase but the inspector reported that the owner was not willing to sell.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary know if in fact any official from the Department called on the man who owned the land and asked him that question? Is he aware that as recently as a week ago the man repeated he would prefer to sell the land to the Land Commission if they were interested in it.

That is not the information I have.

It would appear your information is incorrect. Would you check on it?

I will ask the Minister to check on it but the information I have here would not bear the Deputy out.

I would be glad if the Parliamentary Secretary would check on it.
