Vol. 223 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portlaoise School Playing Field.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he received a proposal in November 1965 from Laois County Council asking for sanction for resale of a playing field to the Christian Brothers' School at Portlaoise; and if he will now convey his sanction to the council so that the matter may be finalised to the satisfaction of the Council which is unanimous in regard to the sale of this property.

This proposal was received by me and is under consideration in my Department. I understand that this field is part of a site, acquired compulsorily for housing purposes some years ago, which is the only housing site in the town in the council's possession. The field was planned to accommodate 50 houses. As the housing authority have stated that the need for further houses is expected to continue to grow, I am not satisfied that it would be wise for them to dispose of this site until a suitable alternative has been obtained at a reasonable price. I understand that efforts to obtain such an alternative site are being continued.
