Vol. 223 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wage Increase for Hospital Personnel.

65.

asked the Minister for Health if, having regard to a reply of 22nd June, 1966, he will now seek sanction from the Minister for Finance to implement the claim for £1 per week and pro rata increases which the trade unions have made in respect of nursing and non-nursing personnel employed in hospitals throughout the Republic.

I am issuing a recommendation in regard to the tenth round increase for staff employed in the health services, both local authority and voluntary.

With effect from what date?

When will it be issued and from what date?

Mr. O'Malley

I cannot give the information in regard to the retrospective aspect, if any, but as far as the other part of the question is concerned, as to when the recommendation will be issued, I can say that it will be forthwith.

Am I to take it then that the question of retrospection will be a matter for negotiation?

Mr. O'Malley

The Deputy is to take it that as far as my responsibilities are concerned I am discharging them. I am giving him good news.

The Minister is surely aware that the local authorities will have no authority to pay an increase until he has sanctioned not only the amount but the date?

Mr. O'Malley

I am telling the Deputy that I am giving sanction to the increase and on the question of the date, that will be forthcoming in the near future.
