Vol. 223 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Modernisation of Civil Service.

4.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made in relation to his statement in March on the modernisation of the Civil Service.

The review of the organisation and systems of the Civil Service with a view to modernisation and the achievement of the highest efficiency is a continuous process. As I said in reply to the Deputy's question on 10th March, 1966, specially trained staff are constantly examining new possibilities of improvement. Since then, there have been notable developments in the field of automatic data processing. Computers will soon make their appearance in the Central Statistics Office, the Land Commission and the Department of Defence. The present computer installation in the Revenue Commissioners' Office will be replaced next year by one immensely more powerful.

If the Deputy has in mind the group, referred to in my March statement, to be set up to review the organisation and functioning of the Civil Service at the administrative level, steps are being taken to assemble that group.

Could the Minister say if, when this group reports, the report will be placed before the Dáil for discussion?

I am answering on behalf of the Minister that the group will report to the Minister whose responsibility this is.
