Vol. 223 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pension Scheme for Auxiliary Postmen.

55.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will introduce a pension scheme on retirement for auxiliary postmen, and not have these men without pension after a lifetime of service to the State.

The existing Superannuation Acts do not permit of the introduction of a pension scheme for part-time employees such as auxiliary postmen and the question of extending the scope of these Acts is one which the Minister for Finance would have to consider in relation to the State service as a whole.

The Minister is aware that some auxiliary postmen, because of the number of hours they work, do not even have their social welfare cards stamped. I am sure the Minister will realise the ambiguous position in which these people find themselves when they come to retire.

There would be very few of them.

Quite a number.
