Vol. 224 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Import Levies.

23.

asked the Minister for Finance when he expects an end to the present economic recession; and when the special import levies will be removed.

I do not accept the implication in the Deputy's question that the economy is in a state of recession. There has been some slackening in the rate of growth over the past year or so from the high level of recent years but the indications are that the momentum of activity is now being regained and that we can look forward to a more rapid rate of expansion in the period ahead.

As announced on 30th June last, the Government have decided to terminate the special import levy on 30th September, 1966.

Does that mean that the stop period has ended and that we are on the go again?
