Vol. 224 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Smuggling of Pigs.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of large scale smuggling of fat pigs from Northern Ireland which is having an upsetting effect on the pig trade in the Republic; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

The Revenue Commissioners have been fully alive to the possibility of an increase in pig smuggling into the State; they have, however, no reason to believe that such smuggling is occurring on a large scale. I am satisfied that they are taking all preventive measures possible.

The Revenue Commissioners are obviously not as wide-awake in this respect as they appear to be when they come to collect income tax.
