Vol. 224 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connemara Toilet Accommodation.

66.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the many complaints from tourists visiting the beauty spots of Connemara regarding the complete lack of suitable public toilets in the region; and if he will instruct the local authority to give priority to their provision before the 1967 tourist season commences.

I am aware of complaints regarding the lack of public sanitary conveniences in a number of areas, but I have not received any complaints relating to the Connemara region. The provision of conveniences for Cleggan, Clifden, Clonbur, Leenane, Oughterard and Roundstone is at the planning stage, and sites and preliminary plans have been approved by my Department except in the case of Clonbur where the location and preliminary plan are under consideration by my technical advisers. I understand that Galway County Council are also formulating proposals for the provision of a convenience at Spiddal. I will have the Deputy's request for the early provision of these conveniences conveyed to the county council.

Will the Minister indicate when he will grant the loan for the provision of these amenities? The local authority is awaiting the loan.

Everything in its own due time.

I hope the Minister will recall that we have been awaiting that loan for a long time.
