Vol. 224 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Constituency Populations.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the total population of each constituency as at the date of the general election, 1965; and the total population of each constituency as shown by the recent census.

Population figures for Dáil Constituencies are obtainable only from the periodic Censuses of Population and the latest such data at present available are those for 1961, given in Table 5 of Volume I of the Report of the Census of Population 1961. It is not possible to give similar information for 1965, since a Census of Population was not taken in that year.

While a Census of Population was taken in respect of 17th April, 1966, only a Preliminary Report, compiled from provisional returns furnished by enumerators, has so far been issued. Since the figures in this Report are subject to amendment and since considerable administrative importance attaches to the accuracy of the population totals for Dáil Constituencies, it was not considered desirable to compile provisional data for such areas from the source in question. The definitive figures, based on the information in the individual Household Schedules, are at present being compiled and will be published as soon as possible in Volume I of the 1966 Census Reports, which it is expected will be issued in April, 1967.
