Vol. 224 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill Water Supply.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for the provision of an adequate water supply for the whole of the Achill region in view of local needs and because of the growing popularity of Achill as a tourist centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have already approved preliminary plans for Stages 2 and 3 of the Achill Island regional water supply extension scheme. Final contract drawings for these two stages have not yet been submitted to my Department.

As regards Stage 4 of the scheme. I have asked Mayo County Council for certain additional technical information regarding the preliminary reports submitted to my Department and this is awaited.

Would the Minister state if there is any likelihood that the work will be undertaken before the next tourist season?

I have not an idea but I imagine if it were started in the morning, it would not be available for the next tourist season. I could not see it happening.

It could happen with another Minister.

It does not matter what Minister is here.
