Vol. 224 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Forestry Workers.

23.

asked the Minister for Lands when it is proposed to increase rates of wages for forestry workers and from what date the increase will be paid; and if a decision on these matters will now be given.

24.

asked the Minister for Lands when he will be in a position to announce an increase in forestry workers' wages.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 24 together.

At a recent meeting with the trade unions concerned, an offer was made which is under consideration by the forestry workers' representatives. In the circumstances, I am reluctant to say more at this stage.

Could the Minister give details of the offer?

I could not. The Deputy is aware of the offer.

Could the Minister say what is the retrospective date?

This also is part of the proposed settlement under consideration by those concerned.

Is the Minister not aware that this was in the public press last week?

If that is so, why does your leader ask me?

We want to get the Minister's views.

I do not think this is the time to give my views on any aspect of this subject to consideration. I will have views when a settlement is, as I hope, arrived at.

Could the Minister state why his Department has been the very last to make an offer to the trade unions?

I do not accept that it was the last.
