Vol. 224 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether membership of the European Economic Community will involve this country in regular discussions for the purpose of a common European policy on foreign affairs, defence, education and research, and other matters of common interest; and what are the precise political commitments to which this country will be bound by becoming a full member of the Common Market.

Membership of the European Economic Community will naturally involve participation by Ireland in all aspects of the Community's deliberations. The precise political commitments of membership will depend on the progress which the Community can make towards realisation of its political ideals. The Community in the present stage of its evolution is committed only to the terms of the Rome Treaty which, as the Deputy may be aware, does not in itself contain any commitments in the political field.
