Vol. 224 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Exports to Eastern Countries.

66.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to reports that sheep which have been exported from the Republic to some eastern countries have suffered severe hardship; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not seen any such reports. There has been no shipment of live sheep from this country to any eastern country since October, 1964. Last month 300 sheep were exported to Liberia, West Africa. Reports indicate that there was only one casualty and that the rest of the animals arrived in excellent condition.

Would the Minister say if any investigation has been carried out to find whether there would be a market for dead mutton in these areas?

That has been investigated, but this particular trade requires the live animal.
