Vol. 224 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beef Exports to Italy.

23.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount per lb of the Irish subsidy on beef to be exported to Italy.

No subsidy is payable on exports of beef to Italy. Recently, however, the meat exporters arranged for the export of some specially-cut hindquarter beef to Italy for the purpose of testing the Italian market and exploring the possibility of exporting to that market against a half rate of levy. The final accounts in respect of the trial are not yet available but I have agreed that in the event of some loss being incurred a contribution will be made towards meeting it.

Has the contribution not, in fact, been decided? No? Has the Minister any idea what it will be?

We have no idea yet what the figure is likely to be.

When will the Minister know?

If the Deputy puts down a question in a week or so I may have the information.
