Vol. 224 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Policing NFA March.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Gardaí and the number of motor cars used in policing the march on Dublin by farmers who are members of the NFA; and the total cost involved.

It is not possible at this stage to supply the information and it may prove very difficult to assess with any degree of accuracy the costs of police manpower required in this connection over the past ten days.

If the Deputy repeats his question in a week or so, I may be in a position to give an informative reply.

I am afraid I was not able to hear the Minister. Did you hear the reply, Sir?

I did hear it. If Deputies will insist on making disorderly interruptions, I cannot be heard.

With your permission, Sir, I should like to read the reply again for the Deputy. I said that it is not possible at this stage to supply the information and it may prove very difficult to assess with any degree of accuracy the costs of police manpower required in this connection over the past then days. If the Deputy repeats his question in a week or so I may be in a position to give an informative reply.

Would the Minister indicate whether or not any request was made for the policing of this march on Dublin?

Indeed, at all stages the NFA and the Garda co-operated in ensuring that an orderly march would take place, having regard to the necessities of traffic control and in the interests of public order generally. I am glad to say that matters have worked out in accordance with the co-operation that took place.
