Vol. 224 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Northern Ireland Insurance Cover.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will request all insurance companies transaction motor car insurance business in the State to provide every person who insures a private motor car with a cover note or cover notes to meet the requirements of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 and the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Acts (Northern Ireland), 1930 to 1934, in order to avoid the inconvenience experienced by many motorists who are not informed by the insurance companies of the necessity for the special cover note for Northern Ireland and who for this reason are unable to bring their cars into Northern Ireland at short notice.

The provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, relating to compulsory motor insurance apply within the State only. However, I am asking the insurers to consider the point raised by the Deputy and in particular, to examine the need for drawing the attention of policy holders to the fact that certificates of cover under the 1961 Act have effect within the State only.
