Vol. 224 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Onions.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that there have been heavy imports of foreign onions through illegal channels in the last number of weeks; and, if so, what he proposes to do about it.

I am aware that there is persistent smuggling of onions; since February last the customs have made a number of seizures of smuggled onions in quantities varying from ½ cwt to several tons. Seizures have been more frequent in recent months. I am satisfied that the Revenue Commissioners are taking all possible measures to combat this traffic.
