Vol. 224 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiskey Purchases at Shannon Airport.

7.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he has received any complaints from transatlantic passengers embarking at Shannon Airport for New York to the effect that Irish whiskey purchased in Shannon Free Airport was not available on arrival in New York.

I have received one such complaint during the last two years. It was received early this week and it is at present being investigated.

Mr. O'Leary

I do not know when the Minister's case occured but I know a case that occured in the past few weeks-on investigation, it turned out that there were many more cases —where a visitor who purchased whiskey in this manner, on arrival at New York found that the whiskey was not there for him. Having written to the company, he was informed that the amount of money expended on the whiskey would be refunded. He would prefer the whiskey. Can the Minister assure the House that there are not any other disappointed visitors?

There have been some complaints, purely at local level. which have been carefully examined and checked.

Mr. O'Leary

Has the Minister any idea as to how the whiskey disappeared?

There are various ways, some of which I would not like to refer to.
