Vol. 224 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roadworthiness of Vehicles.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of checks made on the roadworthiness of vehicles that had not been involved in an accident in 1965.

Routine checks, where no defect is discovered, are not generally recorded. Any statistics available do not distinguish between vehicles involved in accidents and others.

The available figures indicate that a total of almost 16,000 checks were made in 1965.

Does the Minister not feel from his personal observation, as I feel from mine, that a vehicle in an accident is checked but that very few other vehicles are checked? There are very many vehicles on the roads that have bad brakes and bad steering and very few are checked.

16,000 were checked.

I shall ask the Minister next week how many accidents occurred. The answer might be very close to 16,000.
