Vol. 225 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill Pier Extension.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if engineers from his Department have examined the pier at Darby's Point, Achill, County Mayo in recent times; and when the work of the extension of the pier will be undertaken.

I refer the Deputy to the reply to his question on the 27th September last. A contract for the boring survey has since been placed and the work is being done at the moment. When the results of the borings are available, the Commissioners of Public Works will prepare a scheme for consideration by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. At this stage I cannot say precisely when actual works can be begun but I can assure the House that there will be no avoidable delay.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary appreciate the urgency of this matter? Promises have been made for years and years, and it is only in recent times that action has been taken. Will he give an assurance to the House that there will be no avoidable delay?

I have just given such an assurance to the House in my reply.
